The statement from the President of Ukraine appeared on the Telegram service and X platform. Zelensky expects Russia to confirm a ceasefire.

"It is a positive sign that the Russians have finally begun to consider ending the war. The entire world has been waiting for this for a very long time. And the very first step in truly ending any war is a ceasefire," wrote Volodymyr Zelensky.

"There is no point in continuing the killing even for a single day. We expect Russia to confirm a ceasefire – full, lasting, and reliable – starting tomorrow, May 12th, and Ukraine is ready to meet," he conveyed.

Putin's statement

Zelensky's post is a reaction to Putin's statement, which appeared overnight from Saturday to Sunday. Vladimir Putin proposed direct talks with Kyiv in Istanbul.

The Russian leader announced that negotiations could take place on May 15, emphasizing the role of Turkish President Recep Erdogan in peace efforts.

Putin also noted the efforts of the new U.S. administration towards peace in Ukraine. "I would like to once again express my gratitude for the mediation services and efforts towards a peaceful resolution of the Ukrainian crisis, undertaken by our foreign partners. These include China, Brazil, African countries, the Middle East, and recently the new administration of the United States of America," he said.
