Trump's approval fluctuates amid LA protests and Musk dispute

As of June 2025, President Donald Trump's approval ratings have shown a modest upward trend, though they remain polarized across different demographics and policy areas, reports USA Today News.

President Donald Trump’s approval ratings have experienced a modest decline amid fresh criticism of his immigration measures, threats of tariffs targeting U.S. businesses, and a high-profile dispute with former ally and ex-DOGE promoter Elon Musk, all of which just occurred in the last couple of weeks.

Deportation

Public opinion on the Trump administration’s deportation efforts showed a positive net approval heading into the weekend, with solid support from Republican voters. However, attitudes remained deeply influenced by differing perspectives on who is being targeted for removal and the scale of the operation, as ABC notes.

According to ABC, the narrow majority of respondents believe the deportation programme is targeting individuals they consider dangerous criminals, leading to strong support and a perception that it enhances public safety. However, when people think the effort focuses on non-dangerous individuals, support declines sharply.

Trade and tariffs

Public perceptions of the national economy have shown some improvement, recovering slightly from their lowest point in early 2025, though overall sentiment remains more negative than positive. Support for new tariffs continues to be weak, with many Americans believing such measures will drive up prices both in the short term and potentially over time. While Trump’s intended goals with tariffs receive more approval, his methods for implementing them remain less popular.

Approval rating

"Trump's approval rating on immigration continues to be higher than his marks on the economy and inflation. As has typically been the case in his second term, he gets his highest specific ratings from Republicans on immigration. His overall job approval remains unchanged," notes ABC.

As of June 3, The Economist reported that 45% of respondents viewed Trump favorably, while 50% viewed him unfavorably. A Rasmussen Reports poll from June 6 showed a 50% approval rating, with 49% disapproving. Morning Consult’s June 2 update recorded 46% approval and 51% disapproval.

Gallup’s survey, conducted between May 1 and 18, placed Trump’s job approval at 43%. A Reuters/Ipsos poll from May 18 found that 42% approved of his performance. Meanwhile, an American Research Group poll from May 17 to 20 showed 41% approval and 55% disapproval. The results do not take into consideration the way Preisdent Trump handles the LA riots.
