Trump pushes for US control of Ukrainian nuclear plants

Donald Trump has adopted a new approach in discussions with Ukraine. This time, the American politician proposed to the government in Kyiv that the United States take over the operation of Ukrainian nuclear power plants. Volodymyr Zelensky did not entirely dismiss Trump's proposal, although he emphasized that their discussions involved only the plant in Zaporizhzhia, which is currently controlled by Russia.

The aim of Donald Trump is to initiate peace talks between Ukraine and Russia. The former American president also seeks to secure advantages for the United States. He is presenting additional conditions and proposals to Ukraine. In this instance, Volodymyr Zelensky discussed nuclear power plants with Trump.

The proposal involves having Americans take control of the Ukrainian nuclear power plants, which—according to Donald Trump—would serve as "the best protection for that infrastructure and support for Ukrainian energy infrastructure."

Volodymyr Zelensky is not outright rejecting the U.S. president's proposal. However, the Ukrainian leader has noted that, for now, he has only discussed the Zaporizhzhia nuclear plant with Donald Trump. This facility is currently under Russian control.

Trump satisfied with talks with Ukraine and Russia

Donald Trump stated that his one-hour phone conversation with Volodymyr Zelensky was "very good." This conversation took place a day after his consultations with Vladimir Putin, also conducted by phone, in which Trump negotiated a proposed 30-day ceasefire between Ukraine and Russia.

BBC reports that Volodymyr Zelensky stated after the conversation that lasting peace can be achieved this year under Trump's leadership. However, Putin continues to impose conditions on Ukraine and the United States that seem impossible to meet. The Russian leader has rejected proposals for a complete ceasefire.
