Flaxseed consists of tiny brown seeds that offer numerous health benefits despite their modest appearance. They are especially valued by women over fifty for helping alleviate menopausal symptoms. These seeds contain lignans, plant estrogens, and omega-3 fatty acids known for their anti-inflammatory effects. However, their beneficial properties do not end there.

What flaxseed contains

Flaxseed is also a rich source of fiber, which supports the digestive system, helps lower cholesterol and blood sugar levels, and provides a lasting feeling of fullness. The omega-3 fatty acids present in flaxseed are essential for the body's proper functioning, influencing brain and circulatory system function and reducing the risk of heart disease and cancer. Flaxseed also contains essential vitamins and minerals, such as B vitamins, magnesium, potassium, calcium, iron, and zinc, which support health on multiple levels.

Flaxseed in your diet

Flaxseed is easy to incorporate into your diet. It can be consumed raw, brewed, whole, or ground, offering benefits to each method. We absorb the seeds best when they are ground, and grinding should be done right before consumption because the fatty acids in the seeds quickly degrade. Ground flaxseed is best consumed raw by adding it to salads, sandwiches, or smoothies. It can also be used as an ingredient in cakes, muffins, and bread, and works well as a thickener in dishes like meat patties.

Another popular way to use flaxseed is to prepare a gruel. Pour water over the seeds at room temperature. In this method, there is no need to crush the seeds, as the mucilage from the outer layer easily dissolves into the water. Consuming the gruel and the seeds is beneficial, and they should be chewed well to absorb as many nutrients as possible.

When to consume flaxseed?

Flaxseed can be consumed both in the morning and evening, as its beneficial effects are not dependent on the time of day. However, there are occasions when timing is worth considering. Morning doses of flaxseed are recommended for stomach issues such as heartburn, acidity, or stomach pain. Additionally, flaxseed infusions or jelly can be consumed on an empty stomach, protecting the stomach lining and supporting the digestive system.

In contrast, consuming flaxseed in the evening can help curb nighttime snacking and support digestion. Flaxseeds contain tryptophan, an essential amino acid for promoting healthy sleep.

Important!

When beginning a flaxseed regimen, it's advisable not to overdo the quantity. Start with one tablespoon daily, soaked in warm water, and gradually increase to 2-3 tablespoons per glass.
