Russia and North Korea pledge deeper ties amid global tensions

Russian President Vladimir Putin assured North Korean leader Kim Jong Un in a message that both countries will continue implementing their strategic partnership treaty. Putin also expressed confidence that Moscow and Pyongyang will further intensify their "efforts to combat contemporary threats and challenges," reports the KCNA agency.

In a New Year's message to Kim Jong Un, chairman of the State Affairs Commission of North Korea, Russian President Vladimir Putin emphasized that cooperation with Pyongyang aligns with the fundamental interests of the peoples of both countries, as conveyed by the Korean Central News Agency (KCNA).

According to the agency, the congratulatory letter was sent on December 17. Putin emphasized that the June summit between Russia and North Korea elevated their relations to a new qualitative level. "The comprehensive strategic partnership agreement has created the conditions for fundamentally expanding mutually beneficial cooperation in all key areas," KCNA quoted from the letter.

New stage of cooperation

"I am convinced that in the upcoming year, we will continue our close cooperation in implementing this historic agreement, further aligning our efforts in combating contemporary threats and challenges," the letter stated. "This undoubtedly aligns with the core interests of the peoples of Russia and North Korea," the message added.

Putin wished Kim Jong Un and his close ones health and happiness, and the citizens of North Korea prosperity.

Treaty on strategic partnership

On December 4, the Treaty on Comprehensive Strategic Partnership between Russia and North Korea came into effect, signed on June 19 during Putin's visit to Pyongyang. According to the preamble of the treaty, it aligns with the key interests of the peoples of Russia and North Korea and contributes to ensuring peace, security, and regional and global stability.

According to the document, both parties permanently support and develop, with regard to their states' laws and international obligations, relations of general strategic partnership based on the principles of mutual respect for state sovereignty and territorial integrity, non-interference in internal affairs, equality, and other principles of international law concerning friendly relations and cooperation between states.
