Ukraine strikes Russian airfield amid drone attack
An airstrike has hit a Russian military airfield located roughly 400 miles from Ukraine’s border, as Moscow launched what Kyiv calls the "biggest overnight bombardment" since the war began.
Ukrainian Special Forces claim they damaged two Russian fighter jets in a night-time raid on an airbase in the Nizhny Novgorod region of Russia. The airfield is loctated about 400 miles from the Ukrainian border. This marks another Ukrainian attack deep in the enemy's territory.
"According to preliminary information, two units of enemy aircraft were hit (probably MiG-31 and Su-30/34 aircraft). The results of the combat operation are being clarified," said the army's general staff.
The Russians have used the attacked airfield during the war to deploy MiG-31K fighters carrying ballistic missiles used to bomb Ukrainian cities. The main goal of the special operation was to disrupt Russian offensive capabilities as Putin's army intensified its night-time missile and drone strikes.
Russian troops have successfully pushed back the frontline in the north-east Sumy region as well as in the east of Ukraine, in Donetsk. The intensification of Russian attacks came after a groundbreaking Ukrainian Operation "Spiderweb," which destroyed or damaged over 40 Russian aircraft last week. However, according to sources cited by The Guardian, Putin is yet to fully retaliate for the attack.
"Biggest overnight bombardment"
Ukraine’s air force has reported that Russia launched 479 drones overnight in what it describes as the largest aerial assault since the beginning of the war. In addition to the drones, 20 missiles of various types were fired at multiple locations across Ukraine, with central and western regions bearing the brunt of the attack.
According to the Ukrainian Air Force, air defenses successfully intercepted 277 drones and 19 missiles mid-air. Only 10 of the aerial threats reportedly reached their intended targets.
