Zelensky replaces National Security chief amid Ukraine conflict
President Volodymyr Zelensky has removed Oleksiy Danilov from his position as Secretary of the National Security and Defense Council of Ukraine.
In a subsequent decree, Zelensky appointed the head of the Foreign Intelligence Service, 51-year-old Oleksandr Lytwynenko, to this position.
For now, the reasons behind the Ukrainian president's decision remain unclear.
The career of Oleksiy Danilov
Oleksiy Danilov, 61, hails from the Luhansk region where he began his political journey. He served as the mayor of Luhansk and later, as the governor of the region, which is now under Russian occupation. Danilov also held a seat in the Supreme Council of Ukraine.
He has been the Secretary of the National Security and Defense Council of Ukraine since 2019.
Who is Danilov's successor?
Oleksandr Lytwynenko, the new head of the NSDC, has led the Foreign Intelligence Service of Ukraine since July 2021. Before this role, he was in charge of the National Institute for Strategic Studies. He also served as the deputy secretary of the National Security and Defense Council from April 2014 to August 2019.
