VP Vance comments on American cardinal Robert Prevost elected as pope Leo XIV
The Vice President of the United States, J.D. Vance, congratulated the new pope, American Cardinal Robert Prevost.
Cardinal Robert Prevost from the USA has been elected as the new pope, taking the name Leo XIV. The announcement of his election was made on Thursday, from the balcony of St. Peter's Basilica by Cardinal Protodeacon Dominique Mamberti.
US President Donald Trump had already extended his congratulations to Pope Leo XIV, followed by Vice President J.D. Vance.
"Congratulations to Leo XIV, the first American Pope, on his election! I’m sure millions of American Catholics and other Christians will pray for his successful work leading the Church. May God bless him!" J.D. Vance wrote on the platform X.
Interestingly, in February, Cardinal Robert Prevost posted a comment on his profile on the platform X referencing an article that criticized J.D. Vance's approach to mercy towards others. He quoted the title of the article published by the National Catholic Reporter: "JD Vance is wrong: Jesus doesn't ask us to rank our love for others."
