Zelensky congratulates new pope, seeks Vatican support for peace
Volodymyr Zelensky congratulated the newly elected pope, writing, "Ukraine deeply values the Holy See’s consistent position in upholding international law," on the X service. He concluded with a Latin phrase that means "for many more years."
Zelensky's post appeared shortly after the new pope was elected. The President of Ukraine wrote in English.
"Congratulations to His Holiness Pope Leo XIV on his election to the See of Saint Peter and the beginning of his pontificate," the President of Ukraine stated.
"Ukraine deeply values the Holy See’s consistent position in upholding international law, condemning the Russian Federation’s military aggression against Ukraine, and protecting the rights of innocent civilians. At this decisive moment for our country, we hope for the continued moral and spiritual support of the Vatican in Ukraine’s efforts to restore justice and achieve a lasting peace," Zelensky added.
Toward the end of his message, he expressed wishes for "wisdom, inspiration, and strength." He concluded with the Latin phrase "Ad multos annos," meaning "for many more years."
