In a 23-page report, the UN Human Rights Office (OHCHR) stated that the Israeli military operation in the Gaza Strip from October 2023 to June 2024 led to the destruction of local healthcare facilities, resulting in the deaths of many patients, medical staff members, and civilian residents of the enclave.

The UN report documents at least 136 attacks on 27 out of 38 hospitals in the Gaza Strip and 12 other medical facilities. UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Tuerk emphasized that the protection of hospitals is crucial and must be respected by all parties involved in the conflict.

Consequences of the military campaign

Israel denies the accusations of violating international law, arguing that it provides warnings to civilians before attacking Hamas-related facilities. The Israeli army accuses Hamas of using hospitals as command centers.

According to Palestinian authorities, the Israeli military campaign resulted in the deaths of over 45,500 Palestinians, and at least 108,000 were injured. The campaign was launched in response to a Hamas attack on Israel in October 2023, in which 1,200 people were killed and more than 250 were abducted.
