Ukraine surprised the world by carrying out a drone attack on Russian nuclear bombers without briefing the Trump administration beforehand.
The operation, which had been planned for over a year, involved smuggling drones into Russian territory. According to reports from CBS and Axios, the White House was not informed about the planned attack.
As a result of the attack, at least 41 of the Kremlin's heavy bombers were destroyed in four different locations in Russia. Among the destroyed aircraft were TU-95 "Bear" bombers, A-50 "Mainstay" command planes, and TU-22 "Backfire" bombers.
The New York Post highlights that the relationship between Donald Trump and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky was marked by tension, a dynamic that may have influenced Ukraine's level of trust in Washington.
Trump repeatedly criticized Zelensky, blaming him for the war, which may have influenced the decision not to inform the U.S. about the planned attack.
Ukraine's attack occurred at a time when Russian forces intensified bombings of Ukrainian cities, meeting international condemnation. Despite attempts at mediation between Ukraine and Russia, Trump continued to place some blame for the conflict on Zelensky.
Americans are helping Ukraine
The U.S. Congress has approved over $175 billion in aid to Ukraine since the war began in February 2022, of which $66.9 billion is military aid. In light of the escalating conflict, voices have emerged in Congress advocating for increased sanctions on Russia and providing more weapons to Ukraine.
