Ukraine and USA broker ceasefire, Russia under pressure

Ukraine and the USA have reached an agreement on a ceasefire with Russia. This undermines the Kremlin's initiative and prevents it from shifting the responsibility of continuing the fighting onto the authorities in Kyiv, assessed the head of the Kyiv government’s Disinformation Counteracting Center, Andriy Kovaleko.

What do you need to know?

  • Ukraine and the USA have reached an agreement on a ceasefire with Russia. According to Andrij Kovaleko, head of the Disinformation Counteracting Center, this deprives the Kremlin of initiative.
  • The meeting in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, was crucial for the arrangements, which are not in Russia's favor as it attempts to disrupt the talks.
  • Russia is conducting a propaganda campaign in the West, claiming that Ukraine does not want peace. Kovaleko deems these claims untrue.

Andrij Kovaleko emphasized that Ukraine is ready for peace, and the decision on the ceasefire is now up to Moscow. "The ball is in Moscow's court. Ukraine is ready for peace. If Putin doesn’t cease fire, it will only confirm that his main goal is further war," wrote Kovaleko on Telegram.

Kovaleko noted that Russia hoped to gain concessions such as the surrender of Kherson and Zaporizhzhia, which Ukraine firmly rejects. In his view, the fact that negotiations continue shows that Russia's strategy has not brought the expected results.

"The question remains, is Russian diplomacy ready"

"Obviously, Donald Trump is more interested in constructive dialogue than confrontation, which should lead to a specific outcome," he emphasized.

Kovaleko expressed the expectation that the agreements between Ukraine and the USA will test Russia. "The only remaining question is whether Russian diplomacy, which was betting on the failure of the talks, is ready for such a development. Does Lavrov have a contingency plan for this eventuality, since the Ukrainian-American agreement deprives Russia of initiative in the negotiations?" summed up Kovaleko.

Ukraine - USA talks. What was agreed?

The United States and Ukraine have announced progress in talks regarding a ceasefire. Ukraine has accepted the US proposal for a 30-day truce. Now the decision is up to Russia. The USA will meet with Russia to discuss the terms of the truce.

President Donald Trump announced further diplomatic meetings and an invitation for Volodymyr Zelensky to the White House.

During Tuesday's talks in Saudi Arabia, the topic of resuming American military aid to Ukraine also arose. Washington expressed readiness to resume supplying equipment and sharing intelligence. "The United States will immediately lift the pause on intelligence sharing and resume security assistance to Ukraine," states the joint statement of the two countries.
