Turkmenistan, one of the most fascinating countries in Asia, is implementing changes that might attract more tourists. The new legislation allows for the acquisition of electronic visas, thereby eliminating the need for an invitation letter. This is a major step forward for prospective visitors.

New entry rules to Turkmenistan

"Since it became independent after the Soviet Union's collapse in 1991, the gas-rich Central Asian nation has placed strict entry requirements on would-be visitors. All foreign nationals have needed to obtain a visa in advance, and supply a formal "letter of invitation." Even so, many have been turned down for unclear reasons," reports The Independent.

For tourist visas, it is advisable to request the necessary invitation from one of the Turkmen travel agencies.

The "Independent" highlights that many applicants are met with refusals without given reasons. Only about 10,000-15,000 tourists visit the country annually.

The new regulations will simplify the process by allowing travelers to fill out a straightforward online form, which is intended to facilitate business travel and boost tourist traffic. Although the date for the introduction of the new regulations has not yet been announced, "The Independent" assures it will happen soon.

One of the biggest attractions in Turkmenistan is the "Gates of Hell" gas crater, located 160 miles north of the capital, Ashgabat. It was formed in 1971 due to a ground collapse during gas drilling.
