Trump's plan: Economic pressure on Russia for Ukraine peace

According to Peter Doran, an expert from the Washington think tank Foundation for Defense of Democracies, President Trump is committed to achieving lasting peace in Ukraine. However, Doran emphasized in an interview with the Polish Press Agency that strong economic pressure on Russia is essential for achieving this peace.

The meeting of the US and Russian delegations in Riyadh may start a process leading to peace in Ukraine. Peter Doran, an expert from the American think tank Foundation for Defense of Democracies, assesses how the fate of these negotiations may unfold.

Peter Doran believes that President Trump is striving for lasting peace in Ukraine. A key element of this process will be increasing economic pressure on Russia.

Doran points out that Russia's weakened economy makes it susceptible to additional sanctions. He proposes targeting financial institutions that support Russian trade and increasing arms supplies to Ukraine. This strategy aims to compel Putin to choose peace.

The expert discusses conditions for lasting peace in Ukraine: "Pressure on Russia is needed"

There is currently no agreement on the table, not even the outlines of one. The peace process remains in the exploratory phase. President Trump is trying to determine what both sides are willing to concede and what they are unwilling to relinquish, as well as how to ensure that Russia will not attack Ukraine again in the future - emphasized Doran.

Doran recalled that in 2014, there were European peace talks in Minsk. European leaders failed to reverse Russia's actions and, as it turned out in 2022, failed to stop them.

According to Doran, President Trump has no intention of abandoning Europe but is focused on establishing peace in Ukraine. This process remains in the exploratory phase.

The recognition, according to the expert, is also being conducted by Putin. Putin is testing President Trump to determine how much he can extract from him. However, if he faces serious consequences for evasions and attempts to manipulate the peace process, positive negotiation outcomes are possible - says Peter Doran in an interview with PAP.

Doran emphasizes that creating a coalition of countries ready to support Ukraine is crucial. The Prime Ministers of the United Kingdom and Sweden have already declared their willingness to send troops. Such a coalition aims to prevent violations of peace agreements.
