Trump envoy meets Hungarian officials amid Russia talks tensions
A high-ranking official from Donald Trump's administration arrived in Budapest to personally convey information to the Hungarian government following the US-Russia meeting in Riyadh.
The US Embassy in Budapest reported that Louis L. Bono, a senior official from the Bureau of European and Eurasian Affairs, met with Hungary's Deputy Foreign Minister Levente Magyar on Wednesday in Budapest.
"Senior Bureau Official for the Bureau of European and Eurasian Affairs Louis L. Bono met with Deputy Foreign Minister Levente Magyar in Budapest today. The two officials discussed a range of key issues of importance to advancing American and Hungarian security and prosperity. Senior Bureau Official Bono reaffirmed the United States’ commitment to bringing an end to the war in Ukraine in a way that’s fair, enduring, sustainable, and acceptable to all parties involved," the American embassy stated.
Levente Magyar noted that Bono visited specifically to convey to the Hungarians the resolutions reached during the preliminary Russian-American negotiations in the capital of Saudi Arabia.
Bono also said that the Trump administration saw Hungary as an important international ally "and counts on us especially in promoting dialogue between Washington and Brussels," Magyar stated, as quoted by the Hungarian HVG.
He argued that strengthening European defense capabilities is also in the interest of the United States and Hungary.
Negotiations between the USA and Russia, which began in Riyadh, are causing significant concerns in Europe. On Wednesday, an advisor to the Hungarian Prime Minister, Balazs Orban, criticized European leaders, saying that the leaders of Europe "started scrambling in a panic", although "everything goes according to the script, except that according not to theirs, but that of [Hungarian Prime Minister] Viktor Orbán."
