U.S. and Russia agree to negotiations for Ukraine peace
The spokesperson for the U.S. Department of State reported that Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov and U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio agreed to appoint "respective high-level teams to begin working on a path to ending the conflict in Ukraine as soon as possible."
U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov agreed that teams will be formed to negotiate a swift end to Russia's war in Ukraine, according to the U.S. Department of State's spokesperson, Tammy Bruce, on Tuesday.
Declaration of cooperation
The politicians also agreed to establish a consultative mechanism to address "irritants" to U.S.-Russian relations.
One phone call followed by one meeting is not sufficient to establish enduring peace. We must take action, and today we took an important step forward, emphasized the spokesperson for the Department of State after Tuesday's talks between the U.S. and Russian delegations in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.
U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov also agreed to collaborate on matters of shared geopolitical interest.
The politicians also agreed to collaborate in the areas of economy and investment opportunities that will arise with the end of the war in Ukraine.
First talks since the invasion of Ukraine
The talks between the Russian and American delegations lasted over four hours and were the first since Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine.
There was a very serious conversation on all the issues we wanted to raise, said Russian representative Yuri Ushakov. He added that it is unlikely that a meeting between Putin and Trump will take place next week.
