Trump backs Greenland's self-rule; Denmark welcomes stand
Lars Lokke Rasmussen, the Danish Foreign Minister, expressed satisfaction with Donald Trump's declaration recognizing Greenland's right to self-determination.
Lars Lokke Rasmussen, the head of Danish diplomacy, expressed his satisfaction on Wednesday with the statement made by U.S. President Donald Trump regarding the recognition of Greenland's right to self-determination. Rasmussen, who is currently visiting Finland, emphasized that this recognition was a key element of the American leader's speech.
Donald Trump had previously expressed interest in acquiring Greenland multiple times. During his first term from 2017 to 2021, he even proposed to the Danish authorities the idea of purchasing the island. In his latest address to the joint houses of Congress, Trump argued that the United States needs Greenland for both national and international security reasons.
"We need it really for international, for world security, and I think we're going to get it. One way or the other, we're going to get it," Trump declared. He sought to encourage the residents of Greenland to join the USA, promising them security, wealth, and development that would elevate Greenland to new heights.
"We will ensure your security, make you wealthy, and together we'll lift Greenland to heights you never considered possible," Trump argued during his address.
Denmark's Reaction
Rasmussen reminded that efforts are ongoing to "loosen the relations between Denmark and Greenland." However, he also noted that he is not certain whether Greenlanders wish to become part of the United States.
Trump's declaration met with various reactions, but for Denmark, the key issue is the recognition of Greenland's right to self-determination, as emphasized by the Danish Foreign Minister.
During the address, Donald Trump repeated practically all the topics that appeared in his inaugural speech for his second term, as well as issues he has been discussing over the past few weeks.
