Danes humorously counter Trump's Greenland proposal with California "purchase"
The Danes humorously responded to Donald Trump's intentions after he mentioned the USA's interest in acquiring Greenland. An online petition emerged, inviting anyone supporting Denmark "buying" California to sign. Additionally, a fundraising campaign has begun for this purpose.
"Have you ever looked at a map and thought, ‘You know what Denmark needs? More sunshine, palm trees, and roller skates.’ Well, we have a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to make that dream a reality," wrote the petition's authors, which has already gathered over 200,000 signatures.
The document outlines several "benefits" Denmark would enjoy from "purchasing" California. These include better weather, a secure supply of avocados, and technological dominance.
"Denmark will rename Disneyland to 'Hans Christian Andersenland'," the authors caution in a satirical tone.
The petition suggests that after raising a trillion dollars, "give or take a few billion," negotiations will be led by "the best negotiators - Lego executives and the cast of the Danish series 'Borgen'.
Trump wants to take over Greenland
Donald Trump expressed that Greenland, a territory dependent on Denmark, should come under the control of the United States. He threatened to impose high tariffs on Denmark if its government in Copenhagen did not agree to sell Greenland. Trump also did not rule out using force to achieve his "Arctic ambitions."
The Prime Minister of Greenland, Mute Egede, declared on Facebook that "Greenland belongs to Greenlanders, and their future and fight for independence is their own business". He also emphasized that Americans and Danes may have different perspectives.
Meanwhile, the Prime Minister of Denmark, Mette Frederiksen, stated to Danish TV2 that while Greenland’s aspirations for independence are understandable, "the island is not for sale," as she reiterated.
