The children died instantly when a 66-year-old woman veered her vehicle into the gathering at the Swan Creek Boat Club, located in Berlin, roughly 30 miles south of Detroit, as reported by Monroe County Sheriff Troy Goodnough to the Associated Press.
"The scene was described by the first responders as extremely chaotic, with high level of emotions of those directly involved and those who witnessed this horrific incident," Sheriff Goodnough stated.
The police chief further noted that three children and six adults were rushed to local hospitals by helicopters and ambulances due to serious, potentially life-threatening injuries. Others who sustained injuries were given immediate onsite medical care, with some subsequently transported to hospitals by private vehicles.
The 66-year-old has been arrested
Goodnough did not reveal the identity of the driver involved in the tragic accident. Nevertheless, he confirmed that the woman had been arrested and is currently being held in Monroe County Jail, suspected of operating a vehicle under the influence of alcohol and causing death. The sheriff mentioned that the woman is cooperating with investigators and might face additional charges as the investigation proceeds.
He also noted that there were reports the woman had been at a nearby tavern just before the incident occurred. The authorities have since closed the tavern and plan to search for part of their ongoing investigation.
