Tragedy strikes as an avalanche traps dozens in Uttarakhand, India

Indian media reported that at least 57 people were trapped in a snow avalanche that descended on a national highway in Badrinath Dham, in the northern part of the country. Local authorities have stated that a rescue operation is underway on the route connecting Mana to Ghastoli, as efforts continue to locate those buried under the mounds of snow.

Uttarakhand, known for its mountainous terrain, frequently experiences extreme weather conditions, which pose challenges for rescue operations. The current priority is to reach the victims quickly and provide them with necessary assistance.

Avalanche in India: Dozens trapped under snow

Residents of the region are advised to avoid traveling in the avalanche-prone area due to the unstable situation. Further snow slides could potentially result in more victims.

The avalanche occurred on Friday after heavy snowfall. The victims are primarily workers involved in road work.

The workers were clearing snow from the road when the avalanche engulfed their campsite, which was set up near the work site. Emergency services, the local community, and humanitarian organizations rushed to help. Several people have been freed so far.

Officials reported on Friday that more than 55 workers were trapped on a national highway in Uttarakhand after an avalanche descended on Badrinath Dham following intense snowfall.

The administration, along with teams from the Border Roads Organisation, rushed to the site to carry out the rescue operation. Disaster management secretary Vinod Suman stated that the operation aims to search the snow mound, and rescuers estimate that more than 40 people may still be buried.
