Tesla's used car surge as Musk's politics spark debate
The number of used Teslas in the American market increased by 33% in 2025, according to current data reported by Business Insider. Experts associate this situation with the political activities of Elon Musk, the owner of Tesla.
According to Autotrader data, the number of used Teslas rose from 8,500 at the beginning of 2025 to 11,515 by mid-March.
Experts point out that Elon Musk's actions impact Tesla's image. The increase in the number of used Teslas may be due to greater product availability. However, the prices of used Teslas are dropping, which may discourage owners from selling. Currently, the average price of a used Tesla is $10,000 lower than that of other electric cars.
Tesla crisis
Tesla's deliveries in the first quarter of 2025 fell more than expected, marking the worst result since 2022. The company delivered 336,681 cars, significantly below analysts' forecasts and also lower than the figure from the first quarter of 2024, reports the Financial Times.
Tesla's problems may stem from several factors. Elon Musk's involvement with the policies of American President Donald Trump, along with his comments on European political issues, may have affected the company's image in that region, notes the Financial Times. Additionally, delays in updating the Model Y, one of Tesla's key vehicles, negatively impacted sales results.
On Saturday, opponents of Elon Musk's involvement in President Donald Trump's administration gathered in front of Tesla showrooms in the United States and some European cities, hoping their protest would lead to a further decline in sales of cars produced by his company.
In previous demonstrations, some participants committed acts of vandalism, setting Tesla cars on fire. U.S. Attorney General Pam Bondi condemned these actions as acts of domestic terrorism.
