Square waves: A stunning yet perilous attraction on Île de Ré

Although they seem beautiful, square waves can be hazardous. These so-called square waves can be observed on open waters and near the shore. In Europe, there is a place where they appear more frequently than in other parts of the world.

Square waves make an incredible impression in photographs; seeing them with your eyes is even more spectacular. Where do these unusual formations come from?

Square waves in Europe

This phenomenon, resembling a checkerboard on the water, arises from the interaction of wind with the sea surface, creating a grid effect of squares.

While visually fascinating, square waves can be as dangerous as tides. Powerful currents appear in the spaces between their structure. Such waves often reach up to several yards, so they frequently cause ships to sink. When these waves appear in the water, leaving it becomes almost impossible.

Square waves as an attraction on an island in Europe

Interestingly, there is a unique place in Europe where this phenomenon can be regularly observed. It is the French island of Île de Ré, located off the western coast of France. Each year, it attracts many tourists eager to see these famous square waves with their own eyes.

You can reach Île de Ré from La Rochelle via a bridge that is about 2 miles long. To safely admire this phenomenon, it is best to head to the lighthouse. The view of the waves from the beach is impressive, and in good weather, you can climb to the top of the lighthouse.
