"Snow White" struggles: Preview sales tank despite hype

American preview screenings of "Snow White," featuring Rachel Zegler and Gal Gadot in the lead roles, have begun. Unfortunately, for Disney, ticket sales are likely to be disappointing—the film is performing worse than "Kung Fu Panda 4," for example.

As reported by Deadline, we know the box office results from American theaters for the preview screenings of "Snow White." These results are not encouraging for Disney's management, as the production has grossed about $3.5 million. This places it barely above "Maleficent 2" with Angelina Jolie ($2.3 million) and Tim Burton's "Dumbo" ($2.6 million), both of which were not huge commercial hits.

Will "Snow White" disappoint financially? First results are worrying

The situation becomes concerning given that "Snow White" had a budget of $270 million. Additionally, in many states, it's spring break, so families are often on vacation and avoiding theaters.

Deadline cites research indicating that 94% of respondents in the US were aware that "Snow White" would soon be in theaters. However, only 39% said they were interested in the film and might see it in theaters.

"Snow White" has faced several controversies—the casting of dwarfs was problematic. Many people accused actress Rachel Zegler after a few interviews of not respecting the original, and some of Gal Gadot's political views divided fans.

Although this has nothing to do with the film's quality it might have led some people to decide not to watch the film.

Reviewers are rating "Snow White" harshly. Currently, on Rotten Tomatoes, it has only a 46% positive rating, which is lower than that of "Maleficent" or the live-action "Aladdin."
