Secrets of Sardinia: Herbal brew boosts longevity battle
According to data from Eurostat on May 3, 2024, Italians are ranked third in Europe for longevity. The residents of Sardinia significantly contribute to these statistics. This island is one of the five blue zones in the world, where people often live to be over 100 years old.

The list includes, in addition to, Sardinia, Okinawa island in Japan, Ikaria in Greece, the Nicoya Peninsula in Costa Rica, and the city of Loma Linda in California. I will focus on the habits of the residents of sunny Italy. Perhaps the recipe for longevity includes a brew that Sardinians prepare from a mix of three herbs.
Why do Sardinians live longer?
The current average life expectancy of Sardinians is 85 years, four years more than the European average provided by Eurostat. For comparison, according to data from the Central Statistical Office in Poland, in 2023, men lived on average 74.7 years, and women lived on average 82 years. In Sardinia, many elderly people reach 100 years. How is this possible?
The sun helps maintain good health, increasing the production and absorption of vitamin D. The mountainous terrain encourages physical activity. In Sardinia, older people do not watch TV but enjoy the outdoors.
Maintaining a healthy body relies significantly on a holistic approach. In addition to a healthy diet, Sardinians also care about their spiritual life and social connections.
What do Sardinians eat?
The culinary choices of the residents of the Italian island are accurately described by Mateusz Durbas, a clinical dietitian, in an interview for Polish Radio:
First and foremost, we see a large consumption of plant-based foods. (...) In the diet of residents of blue zones, there is a large amount of fresh vegetables and fruits. Unsalted and unsweetened nuts, seeds, legumes – like broad beans, beans, chickpeas – whole grain products, a large amount of fresh and dried herbs, as well as fish and seafood appear.
Sardinian herbal drink
I cannot guarantee that adopting the dietary habits of Sardinian residents will ensure your longevity, but it will certainly positively impact your health. You can start by introducing a brew of three herbs.
To prepare the mix, you need 2 teaspoons of oregano, 2 teaspoons of sage, and 2 teaspoons of thyme. You can use either fresh or dried herbs for the brew.
Pour boiling water over them and let it steep for 10 minutes. Drink in small sips up to three times a day. A glass of the infusion after a meal positively affects digestive processes. The tea can be consumed at night.
How does the mix of sage, thyme, and oregano work?
A sage brew has anti-inflammatory and antibacterial effects. It is recommended for breastfeeding women during milk floods. Sage's antioxidants also help fight free radicals. Their positive effects have been noted in patients with Alzheimer's.
The second component of the mix, thyme, not only tempts with its beautiful aroma but also has antioxidant properties, lowers blood pressure and supports the immune system.
Meanwhile, oregano supports digestive processes and has antifungal properties. Moreover, the infusion, with its addition, can also be used externally on facial skin to help combat acne.
