Where do food moths come from?

Food moths are small insects resembling butterflies, with a much slimmer build and brown coloration. We often encounter them as white larvae, which can cause the most damage. They typically feed on dry products such as flour, groats, rice, sugar, or spices, but their presence isn't limited to those. Small caterpillars can chew through plastic packaging, reaching almost anywhere.

They are the bane of many kitchen spaces, but we usually "bring them" in from the supermarket before they enter. They can infiltrate specific products during production. To avoid this, it's worth carefully examining each product to ensure there are no tiny holes or white cocoons.

Home method for moths

If these unwanted tenants have entered your shelves, promptly dispose of all contaminated food products. Simply cleaning boxes with food won't suffice because moths spread quickly and are likely inside the package. Their eggs are very small, almost invisible to the naked eye. Therefore, if you're unsure, it's better to discard the entire product and even the nearby items.

The infestation of these insects can last several months, so quick action is necessary. The most effective method is thoroughly wiping all shelves and drawers with a solution made from water and vinegar in a 1:1 ratio. You can add a few cloves or citrus essential oil for better results. After cleaning, place bay leaves around the cleaned areas and leave the cabinets empty. Once the moths detect the unpleasant scents of vinegar and spice, they will be gone for good. This method is not only inexpensive but also natural, without the use of chemicals.
