Saudi Arabia warns of heat risks as millions gather for Hajj
Muslims in Saudi Arabia will observe the Day of Arafat on Thursday, June 5. This day falls on the 9th of the month of Dhul-Hijjah and is regarded as the most significant day of the Hajj pilgrimage. The Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities in Saudi Arabia has issued warnings about the extreme heat expected during this time.
The date for the Day of Arafat was confirmed on Wednesday, May 28, after the sighting of the crescent moon, signifying the start of Dhul-Hijjah. It always falls on the 9th day of this month and is the second day of Hajj, the pilgrimage to the Kaaba in Mecca.
Hajj, one of the five pillars of Islam, is not only a physical journey but also a profound spiritual experience. It occurs annually at a specific time and attracts millions of Muslims to the city of Mecca. The event is considered the world's largest annual gathering of people. During the five-day pilgrimage, participants cover over 37 miles, visiting various locations to perform specific rituals.
Day of Arafat
On Thursday, June 5, pilgrims will gather on the plain of Arafat for prayers and spiritual reflection. For those not participating in the Hajj, fasting is recommended. According to Muslim tradition, this is considered the best day of the year.
Concerns about the heat
While the Hajj and the Day of Arafat are profoundly significant spiritual times for Muslims, they bring the risk of physical exhaustion. This isn't just due to the long distances covered but also because of the extreme heat. The Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities in Saudi Arabia advises precautions, such as using sun-protective umbrellas. They also recommend that older people remain in tents during the midday hours.
This year's Hajj takes place from June 4 to 9, with forecasts predicting temperatures of up to 122°F. According to the Islamic lunar calendar, over the next 16 years, the pilgrimages will gradually shift to cooler spring and winter months.
In preparation for this year's pilgrimage, Saudi Arabia has increased the number of hospital beds by 60% and covered roads in critical areas with a special substance to lower the surface temperature by 54°F.
It is important to note that Saudi Arabian authorities have decided to double the financial penalties for those participating in the pilgrimage to Mecca without the necessary permits. This measure aims to reduce the number of unauthorized pilgrims and minimize health risks for attendees.
