Ramadan preparations sweep across Muslim nations: February 28 start
A special time of year for Muslims is fast approaching. Ramadan, the ninth month in the Islamic lunar calendar, is considered holy, so one must prepare accordingly for its observance. Mosques are thoroughly cleaned specifically for this occasion.
In Muslim countries, Ramadan will begin this year on the evening of February 28 and last until March 29. This time is considered holy because 1,400 years ago, the first verses of the Quran were revealed to Muhammad. From dawn to dusk, the faithful refrain from eating, drinking, smoking, and sexual relations.
Ramadan in Muslim countries
Fasting is one of Islam's five pillars, along with the Muslim declaration of faith, daily prayers, charity, and the pilgrimage to Mecca. However, this does not mean that followers of Islam do not eat during Ramadan. Iftar is the first meal consumed after sunset, and suhur is the last meal before sunrise.
During Ramadan, it is not only about fasting but also primarily about prayer. A Muslim is obliged to pray five times a day. During Ramadan, communal prayers recited in the evening after the fifth mandatory prayer are particularly important.
Great preparations
One must prepare appropriately for an important time like Ramadan. This preparation encompasses not only the spiritual realm but also logistical tasks, such as cleaning mosques. In recent days, these tasks have been carried out at full speed.
Among others, in the famous Suleiman Mosque in Istanbul, which is one of Turkey's most famous monuments, a specialized team ensures impeccable order. Similar work is being conducted in other mosques across various Muslim countries. For example, in Egypt, cleaning is conducted under the supervision of national authorities.
Interestingly, not only are mosques being prepared, but bakeries are also involved. According to iHA, the Turkish municipality of Fatih inspected places that produce and sell bread. Price, bread weights, and workplace hygiene were checked during the audit.
