Putin approved the revised nuclear doctrine, according to which a "critical threat" to the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Belarus and Russia may constitute grounds for the use of nuclear weapons.
Deputy Pentagon Press Secretary Sabrina Singh was asked during a meeting with journalists about the Russian leader's decision. "So, we aren't surprised by Russia's update to its nuclear doctrine. It's something that they've been signaling that they intend to update over the last several weeks. It's the same irresponsible rhetoric that we've seen before and that we've seen frankly for the past two years," she stated.
