Russian forces gain ground as Ukraine faces resource strain
In October alone, Russian forces occupied approximately 189 square miles of Ukrainian territory. According to the Ukrainian project DeepState, which cites monitoring data, this is the most significant gain in 2024 and since the start of the Russian counteroffensive in October of the previous year.

The DeepState service points out that while Russian territorial gains in the past month were the largest over the last 12 months, factors such as military-industrial potential, troop training, and especially the rational use of human resources are of greater importance. "Unfortunately, this last aspect is becoming our weak point," the service notes.
Analysts at DeepState emphasize that Russians have learned from previous mistakes and now allocate more time to training their personnel in regiments and brigades.
As a result, the large number of personnel allows the enemy to rotate their human resources regularly. For the Ukrainian armed forces, replacing a brigade on the front lines since February 24, 2022, might pose a challenge, the service notes.
Lost territories are not the most important
"The area of lost territory is certainly important, but it is not the only parameter for assessing the effectiveness of an army. If in October 2022 the enemy attacked Novomykhailivka (Pokrovsk district in the Donetsk region - ed.) with four full companies, now it is very costly for them," summarize the analysts at DeepState.
