Russian-American deal may leave Iran in the lurch
The Iranian newspaper "Jomhouri-e Eslami" has issued a warning that Russia might sacrifice Iran in a deal with the United States concerning Ukraine.
The newspaper highlights that Russia did not support Iranian forces in Syria and also collaborated with the USA and Israel against Bashar al-Assad. "Jomhouri-e Eslami" cautions that Moscow may betray Iran again if Washington offers assistance regarding Ukraine. The newspaper urges Iranian authorities to stay vigilant and devise a strategy for a potential American-Russian agreement.
"Iran will be drawn into this equation alongside Lebanon, Syria, Iraq, and Palestine… and Russia will turn a blind eye to any actions the United States may take against Iran," claims "Jomhouri-e Eslami" in an article widely commented upon by other national media, titled "Us and the Great Moscow-Washington Deal."
Similar concerns are echoed by the newspaper "Shargh," which questions whether Tehran might be sacrificed as part of a deal between Putin and Trump. "Shargh" suggests that Iran should contemplate direct negotiations with the USA regarding its nuclear program.
Iran in the face of international tensions
The Iran International portal notes that Dmitry Peskov, the Kremlin spokesman, is attempting to reassure Iran by asserting that American-Russian talks will not affect Moscow's relations with Tehran. Nonetheless, Iran is concerned that Russia and China might not provide sufficient support in light of the sanctions imposed by the USA in 2018.
