Cheese doughnuts – A traditional flavor that never gets old

There's nothing better than homemade pastries smelling of vanilla and butter. Cheese doughnuts are a dessert many of us associate with childhood. They are quick and easy to prepare, and you can find the ingredients in almost every kitchen. All you need is flour, cottage cheese, butter, eggs, and a few extras to create something truly special.

What makes these doughnuts so special? It's the combination of delicate cheese dough with a crispy, golden crust. You don't need specialized equipment or culinary skills to make them—just a glass and a shot glass to give them their characteristic shape.

How to prepare cheese doughnuts step by step?

Ingredients you need to gather:

  • 14 oz of cottage cheese (can be full-fat or semi-fat),
  • 14 oz of all-purpose flour,
  • 6 oz of butter,
  • 2 medium eggs,
  • 4 tablespoons of sugar,
  • 2 teaspoons of vanilla extract,
  • 2 teaspoons of baking powder,
  • 1/4 teaspoon of baking soda,
  • 1 tablespoon of spirit (optional, can be replaced with vodka, vinegar, or lemon juice),
  • a pinch of salt.

For frying:

  • 2 cups of canola oil.

For decoration:

  • 2 tablespoons of powdered sugar.

Instructions:

  1. Preparing the ingredients: Sift the flour with baking powder and soda. Mix or mash the cottage cheese with a fork. Melt the butter and let it cool.
  2. Kneading the dough: In a bowl, combine cottage cheese, eggs, melted butter, sugar, and vanilla extract. Add the sifted flour and gently mix. Finally, add the spirit and knead the dough briefly.
  3. Forming the doughnuts: Shape the dough into a roll, then cut it into pieces. Roll each piece out flat and cut circles with a glass. Use a shot glass to cut smaller circles in the middle of each larger circle.
  4. Frying: Heat the oil in a deep pot. Fry the doughnuts on both sides until golden.
  5. Serving: Drain the finished doughnuts on a paper towel and sprinkle with powdered sugar.
