According to the agency, the discussions are focusing on the potential to restore normal gas supplies to Europe. Lavrov mentioned that fuel costs for Europe are significantly higher than for the USA.

Lavrov highlighted the differing approaches of Russia and the USA regarding the Nord Stream issue.

- It will be interesting if the Americans use their influence on Europe and will force it not to reject the Russian gas. That would look surreal – stated the Russian minister, as quoted by agency TASS.

Return to Nord Stream 2? The Union won't yield

The President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, declared in early March that she is committed to phasing out Russian gas from Europe, with the goal of gradually reducing reliance on it.

She added that the RePowerEU instrument, aimed at decreasing Europe’s dependency on Russian resources, remains active.

When asked about reports regarding a possible resumption of Nord Stream 2 work involving the United States, von der Leyen stressed the necessity of continued efforts. She acknowledged that while progress has been made, significant gaps remain that call for caution and sustained attention.

Spokesperson for the European Commission, Anna-Kaisa Itkonen, also stated that Nord Stream 2 "is not the project of common interest. It does not diversify the EU’s energy sources."
