Early Wednesday morning on Bourbon Street in the French Quarter of New Orleans, a truck sped into a crowd partying on the street. At least 10 people were killed, and 35, according to the latest information, were injured.

New Orleans Police Department Superintendent Anne Kirkpatrick reported that the individual deliberately bypassed barricades and accelerated down Bourbon Street before firing at officers. According to Kirkpatrick, he aimed to strike as many people as possible.

FBI agent Alethea Duncan clarified on Wednesday that the incident was not considered a terrorist attack. However, improvised explosive devices were discovered, and authorities are investigating their functionality.

Did the assailant die in a shootout with the police?

Initially, it was unclear what happened to the assailant. However, one of the federal law enforcement officers informed CNN that the man was dead. CBS News was able to obtain similar information.

It is still unknown what caused the assailant's death. According to sources from the Associated Press, which also cites police sources, the man was killed after exchanging gunfire with officers.
