Musk calls Trump's tax‑cut bill "a disgusting abnomination"
Elon Musk has taken sharp aim at a new Republican-backed tax proposal that would repeal the Biden administration’s clean energy incentives. It is a move he has condemned as a "massive, outrageous, pork-filled Congressional spending bill is a disgusting abomination."
"Billionaire Elon Musk plunged on Tuesday into the congressional debate over President Donald Trump's sweeping tax and spending bill, calling it a 'disgusting abomination' that will increase the federal deficit," reports Reuters.
The controversial plan, supported by Donald Trump and unveiled by House Republicans, aims to eliminate billions in subsidies currently allocated to electric vehicles, solar power, and other green technologies.
These subsidies were introduced under President Biden’s Inflation Reduction Act and have since become a cornerstone of the administration’s climate policy. Republican lawmakers argue that the cuts are needed to reduce the national deficit and curb inflation, but critics say the plan would harm the U.S. clean energy industry and jeopardize its position in the global market.
Musk criticizes Trump's "big, beautiful bill"
Musk has firmly denounced the proposed tax rollback. He argued that repealing the credits would disproportionately benefit fossil fuel interests and harm U.S. manufacturing. Tesla and other clean energy firms have relied heavily on these incentives to expand domestic production and lower costs for consumers.
Elon Musk added on X: "It will massively increase the already gigantic budget deficit to $2.5 trillion (!!!) and burden America citizens with crushingly unsustainable debt."
Although the proposal faces long odds of becoming law in the current Democratic-controlled Senate, it signals a shift in Republican priorities as the 2024 campaign trail heats up. The messaging behind the tax rollback also aligns with Trump’s broader criticism of Biden’s climate agenda, which he claims undermines traditional energy sectors and imposes unnecessary economic burdens.
According to the Reuters, Musk’s remarks struck a chord. Fiscal conservatives within the Republican Party have raised alarms about the bill’s price tag, which would extend Trump’s signature 2017 tax cuts while also increasing funding for defense and border enforcement.
The House narrowly approved the legislation last month, passing it by a single vote after the Congressional Budget Office projected it would add $3.8 trillion to the current $36.2 trillion national debt. The Senate—also under Republican control—is planning to vote on the "One Big Beautiful Bill Act" within the next month, though it’s likely the measure will be amended before moving forward.
