Musk lashes out at budget bill, predicts voter backlash

Elon Musk unleashed fierce criticism of the president’s budget proposal, denouncing it as a "terrible atrocity." In response, House Speaker Mike Johnson—seen as a close ally of Donald Trump—defended the legislation, pushing back against Musk’s claims.

Musk warned that the budget bill would drastically deepen the U.S. deficit, placing a heavy burden on taxpayers and potentially pushing the country toward financial collapse. While President Donald Trump has praised the proposal as a "one big, beautiful bill," the tech mogul sees it as a threat to economic stability.

House Speaker Mike Johnson called Musk’s criticism "very disappointing" and "very surprising," insisting the tech billionaire is "terribly wrong" about the bill’s intent and impact.

Musk has cautioned that lawmakers who support the budget bill could face serious political consequences, suggesting their backing of the measure may cost them their seats in the next election cycle. Taking to Platform X, the billionaire accused members of Congress of betraying the American people and predicted they would be voted out in 2026.

Reinforcing his stance, Musk doubled down with a clear message: those responsible for advancing the bill would be held accountable at the polls. He pointed to the 2026 Congressional elections as a reckoning, calling on voters to remove officials he claims have turned their backs on the nation.

Musk's relationship with Trump

Musk, who until recently held a senior advisory role in the Trump administration, had previously voiced concerns about the budget bill—though in a more measured tone. His shift to open, pointed criticism now raises questions about the future of his relationship with the White House.

Just last week, the billionaire confirmed his departure from the administration, where he served both as a top advisor to President Trump and as head of the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE). The move signals a clear break from his earlier alignment with the president’s inner circle.
