Mexico rejects Guantanamo plan, opens door for direct returns
Mexican Foreign Minister Juan Ramon de la Fuente stated that Mexico would not permit the United States to detain Mexican migrants at the Guantanamo base and would prefer to take them indirectly.
- Mexico prefers to receive the migrants directly instead, as formally communicated in a diplomatic note to the US embassy in Mexico - stated de la Fuente.
White House spokeswoman Karoline Leavitt informed us that the first deportation flights to Guantanamo had already begun. Details on the number of migrants transported have not been disclosed. This operation is part of a broader plan to expand the detention center to accommodate up to 30,000 people.
Negotiations with the USA
Mexican Economy Minister Marcelo Ebrard noted that the current situation creates an opportunity for negotiations with the USA from a partnership perspective. Both sides agreed to suspend tariffs on Mexican imports for a month, providing time to reach an agreement.
US President Donald Trump announced earlier the imposition of 25-percent tariffs on goods from Mexico, justifying this with the illegal influx of migrants and the fentanyl problem.
As part of the agreement reached, negotiations will begin with the participation of US Secretary of State Marco Rubio and the heads of the finance and commerce departments.
