German Chancellor Friedrich Merz and U.S. President Donald Trump have decided to work closely to end the conflict in Ukraine. According to Stefan Kornelius, spokesperson for the federal government, the two leaders spoke on the phone on Thursday evening, Eastern Time.

Trump strongly supported Germany and its European partners, including France, the United Kingdom, and Poland, in their efforts to achieve lasting peace.

What else did the leaders agree on?

During their phone conversation, Merz and Trump also agreed that trade disputes that could affect relations between their countries must be resolved urgently.

The American president congratulated Merz on assuming the chancellor's office, emphasizing the importance of cooperation between the U.S. and Germany. A spokesperson for the German government highlighted that Merz assured Trump of the irreplaceable role of the United States as a friend and partner to Germany, 80 years after the end of World War II.
