- The temperature in the Lisbon metropolitan area has exceeded 91 degrees Fahrenheit.
- Additional stations may open if the heat wave continues.
In response to the heat wave affecting Lisbon, city officials have decided to keep three subway stations open around the clock. This initiative is designed to offer shelter from the extreme heat, which can reach up to 104 degrees Fahrenheit.
The primary focus of opening these subway stations is to support homeless individuals and those without air conditioning at home. On Wednesday, temperatures in Lisbon surpassed 91 degrees, while the central part of the country experienced temperatures reaching 97 degrees Fahrenheit.
Santa Apolonia, Rossio, and Oriente stations are now open 24/7. The first two are situated in the historic city center, and the third is near popular areas along the Tagus River. Authorities have not ruled out the possibility of opening more stations if the heat wave persists.
Meteorological Forecasts
According to the Portuguese Institute for Sea and Atmosphere (IPMA), high temperatures could persist at least until Saturday. City authorities are working with the Ministry of Health to monitor the situation and take necessary actions.
If the heat wave continues, more subway stations might be opened. Decisions will be made in collaboration with local authorities and health services to ensure the safety of Lisbon residents.
