The detained man is suspected of belonging to a criminal group involved in legalizing the stay of individuals residing in Portugal without valid documentation. The investigation is being conducted by three branches of Portuguese security services, which have already charged him with offenses related to the smuggling of state documents.
Portugal, with a population of over 10 million, has been struggling with the issue of illegal immigration for years. It is estimated that around half a million people live in the country without regulated legal status.
In response to this issue, Prime Minister Luis Montenegro's government has announced the deportation of at least 4,500 illegal immigrants by June of this year.
