Key information

  • The animal was shot by Namibian authorities.
  • The incident took place in the Kunene region, popular among tourists.

On Friday in the Kunene region of Namibia, a tragic event unfolded. A lioness attacked 59-year-old Bernd Kebbel, a well-known businessman and researcher of desert lions. The attack happened near the Hoanib River, where Kebbel was camping.

Kebbel was attacked as he stepped out of the tent mounted on the roof of his car. Despite the swift reactions of his wife and other tourists, who tried to scare the animal away by shouting, the lioness inflicted fatal wounds on him. The Namibian Ministry of Tourism decided to shoot the lioness to ensure the safety of tourists and the local community.

The ministry has confirmed that the lone lioness was shot on Sunday following continuous monitoring by its staff. According to ministry spokeswoman Ndeshipanda Hamunyela, the decision was made because the animal was deemed a threat to both local community members and tourists.

An attractive yet dangerous region

Though it is desert-like, the Kunene region is one of the most attractive spots in Namibia. It features the famous Skeleton Coast and Etosha National Park. Despite the harsh conditions, the area is home to a variety of wild animal species, including lions, elephants, giraffes, leopards, and black rhinos.

The decision to shoot the lioness was difficult but necessary to ensure safety. Namibian authorities emphasize that the protection of tourists and the local community is a priority, especially in such a popular tourist region.
