Key information

  • Nine children and the husband of a Palestinian doctor were killed in an Israeli attack on the Gaza Strip.
  • 11-year-old Adam, the only surviving family member, has a chance for treatment in Europe.
  • The Italian government is working on evacuating the boy from Gaza.

Tragic attack in Khan Yunis

An Israeli airstrike in the southern part of the Gaza Strip, in the town of Khan Yunis, resulted in the death of nine children and their father, Hamdi an-Najjar. The only surviving family member is 11-year-old Adam, who, despite severe injuries, has a chance of recovery. BBC reported that the attack occurred on May 23.

Dr. Hamdi an-Najjar, a physician, died from his injuries on Saturday. His wife, Alaa an-Najjar, a pediatrician, was on duty at the hospital at the time of the tragedy. It was there, in a heartbreaking moment, that the bodies of their children were brought. Despite her unimaginable personal loss, Alaa continued her work.

The only sibling to survive the Gaza Strip attack

The condition of the 11-year-old boy remains critical. However, chances for Adam's treatment have improved thanks to international support. The Italian Foreign Minister, Antonio Tajani, expressed readiness to receive the boy for treatment in Europe. According to the Italian newspaper "La Repubblica," intensive preparations for his evacuation are set to take place next week. His mother is likely to accompany him.

The Israeli army stated that the airstrike targeted suspected individuals in the Khan Yunis area. Meanwhile, an investigation into the children's deaths is ongoing. Importantly, the an-Najjar family had no connections to Hamas, as confirmed by family associates.

Let's remember that the conflict in the Gaza Strip has been ongoing since the fall of 2023, when Hamas launched a surprise attack on Israel, resulting in approximately 1,200 deaths, and about 250 were abducted to Gaza. CBS News reports that since then, over 54,000 Palestinians have been killed as part of the Israeli retaliatory offensive.
