The Governor of South Dakota and potential vice presidential hopeful, Kristi Noem, is generally keen on maintaining a positive public persona. However, revelations from her latest book, in which she admits to killing her dog—a pet she admittedly "hated" and deemed "useless"—have stirred significant controversy.

The British newspaper "The Guardian" managed to preview the contents of Noem's book before its scheduled release in May. The autobiography of the American politician, seen as a potential vice presidential contender, contains numerous startling revelations, particularly distressing to animal enthusiasts.

Her account of shooting her dog

The narrative includes candidly recounting moments when Noem faced tough decisions concerning animals. One such incident involved her 14-month-old rough-coated pointer, Cricket. Despite attempts at training, Cricket exhibited aggression, disrupting pheasant hunts and menacing neighbour's chickens.

Ultimately, following an attack on a family member, Noem determined the course of action was to shoot Cricket and dispose of the body in a gravel pit.

"It was not a pleasant job, but it had to be done." - writes Noem.

But why share such a story? Might it bolster her political career? This shocking admission aims to demonstrate Noem's willingness to tackle difficult, even grim tasks when required.

It wasn't just a dog

Another part of the book tells of a goat that met a similar fate for showing aggression towards children and emitting an unbearable odour. Noem argues that hard choices are part of farm life, requiring practical, sometimes harsh decisions.

The controversial passages ignited a fierce debate across social platforms.

Critiques came from all directions, focusing on a perceived lack of empathy and irresponsible behaviour toward animals. In defence, Noem insists her decisions were justified, arguing that a genuine love for animals can coexist with making dire choices. She highlighted a recent, painful farewell to three elderly horses, emphasizing that it, too, was a difficult yet necessary decision.

Despite the backlash, Noem's book offers insight into her life, offering "more real, honest and politically incorrect" anecdotes. She encourages readers to delve into her biography to view her personal and professional experiences comprehensively.
