Kremlin warns of escalation as Chancellor Merz stirs weapon debate
Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov responded to the comments made by German Chancellor Friedrich Merz regarding the supposed lack of restrictions on the usage of long-range weapons by Ukraine. Peskov expressed that there is "considerable confusion" surrounding this issue.
"If Merz's statements about increasing the range of missiles supplied to Ukraine are true, we are facing an escalation," said Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov.
Putin's spokesperson noted, however, that "there is considerable confusion" on this matter. He said, "It is unclear whether this corresponds to reality or not. Merz mentioned that a decision was made and that the Europeans made this decision. However, a government member denied this yesterday, and today Merz still insists that such a decision was made several months ago," said Peskov.
"There are no restrictions on weapon range"
It should be recalled that on Monday, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz stated that "there are no longer any range restrictions on the weapons delivered to Ukraine, whether from the British, the French, us, or the Americans."
Merz also mentioned that Ukraine can now defend itself by potentially targeting military objectives in Russia, something it was unable to do in the past. "Now it can," emphasized the chancellor, as quoted by the dpa agency.
"Russia ruthlessly attacks civilian targets and bombards cities," said Merz. "Ukraine does not do this, and it should remain so. However, a country that can only confront the aggressor on its own territory is not defending itself properly," added the German chancellor.
