Kiwi: The surprising superfruit for senior health

Kiwi fruits are often added to fruit salads due to their intense green color, which contrasts nicely with the colors of strawberries, oranges, or melons. However, we rarely include these fruits in our daily diet. Some people are put off by their impractical skin, while others find them not juicy enough. Yet, for the health of the older family members, it's worth remembering the understated benefits of kiwi.

Kiwi is a fruit rich in vitamins and minerals, including vitamins C, K, E, potassium, and fiber. In the diet of older adults, vitamin C is crucial as it supports the immune system and helps fight infections. Few know that kiwi contains almost twice as much vitamin C as oranges. In 3.5 ounces of this green fruit, there are 92.7 mg of vitamin C, compared to only 53.2 mg in oranges. But these aren't the only benefits of the notable Kiwi.

Where does the name kiwi come from?

Despite the fruit's Chinese origin, New Zealanders gave it the current name "kiwi" in the 20th century. This name refers to the kiwi bird, a national symbol of New Zealand. The fruit was previously known as "Chinese gooseberries."

The name refers to the bird because of their visual similarities. Kiwi fruits have brown, hairy skin that resembles the bird's plumage.

Kiwi and cardiovascular health

These less popular fruits are rich in vitamin C, vitamin K, and potassium, which support the cardiovascular system. Vitamin K strengthens blood vessels and helps maintain proper calcium management, which is extremely important for seniors. Meanwhile, potassium stabilizes blood pressure and supports the electrolyte balance of muscles.

Support for digestion and the digestive system

Thanks to its fiber content, kiwi is an excellent aid for the digestive system. Regular consumption of kiwi can help maintain proper intestinal peristalsis, preventing constipation, which often affects older individuals. Moreover, the actinidin in kiwi facilitates protein digestion, offering additional digestive health benefits. Interestingly, jelly with kiwi added often doesn't sit well because of this substance.

1 kiwi a day for improved well-being

Scientific research shows that regular consumption of kiwi can positively affect mood and reduce stress levels. Just a few days is enough to notice a boost in vitality and overall quality of life. This is especially important for seniors, who, due to numerous health issues and anxieties, are more prone to poor mood or stress compared to people of other ages.

Not just vitamins, but antioxidants too

Kiwi is also a rich source of antioxidants, which protect cells from damage caused by aging and free radicals. Regular consumption of kiwi can contribute to maintaining healthy and youthful skin. This is primarily due to improved collagen production, in which vitamin C, contained in the fruit, plays a crucial role.
