  • The Italian police arrested 97 people in an operation against the 'Ndrangheta.
  • Arrests took place in many cities, including Rome and Milan.
  • Mafiosi are accused of drug trafficking, extortion, and kidnapping.

The Italian police carried out operation "Millennium" on Wednesday, targeting the Calabrian mafia. 'Ndrangheta is considered the most dangerous mafia organization in Italy, conducting activities worldwide. Ninety-seven people were arrested, which is a significant blow to this criminal group.

The operation focused on Reggio Calabria, but arrests also took place in other cities such as Rome, Milan, Monza, Pavia, Bologna, Verona, Rimini, Turin, and locations in Sicily. As a result of police actions, several mafia clans were dismantled, and companies related to the food industry and construction were seized.

Those arrested were charged with mafia membership, international drug trafficking, extortion, and kidnapping. Among the suspects were two former Calabria councilors, highlighting how deeply rooted 'Ndrangheta is in local power structures.

'Ndrangheta's global reach

The main source of income for 'Ndrangheta is global smuggling and drug trafficking. This organization is known for the wide reach of its operations, making it one of the most powerful criminal syndicates in the world.

Operation "Millennium" demonstrates the determination of Italian authorities in fighting organized crime. Arrests and asset seizures are important steps in weakening 'Ndrangheta's influence, although the fight against the mafia remains a challenge.
