Hop cone tincture: A natural remedy for stress and insomnia
Hop cone tincture is a natural remedy for alleviating stress, insomnia, digestive issues, and menstrual discomfort. It's very easy to prepare.
The common hop is a climbing plant likely originating from China. It spread across the Northern Hemisphere, and in Europe, it initially grew wild. Cultivation began in the 9th century in Germany. The cone-shaped flowers, known as hop cones, eventually became incredibly significant because they proved essential for beer production.
What are the properties of hop cones?
Hop cones have long been valued for their medicinal properties. In ancient Rome, they were used as a sedative and for treating insomnia, headaches, and toothaches. A tincture made from dried hop flowers is the easiest way to experience the extraordinary properties of this plant. Our ancestors used it to cope with nerves and mental exhaustion; it also made falling asleep easier.
Modern research confirms that hop cones indeed have such effects. Additionally, they have a positive impact on the circulatory system because they contain polyphenolic compounds that strengthen it. Meanwhile, flavonoids neutralize free radicals, delaying cell aging processes and reducing the risk of chronic diseases such as atherosclerosis.
When to harvest hop cones?
Hop cones are harvested in late summer and early fall when they are rich in resins and essential oils. After harvesting, they are dried at a temperature of 140-167 degrees Fahrenheit, which helps preserve valuable compounds. These processed cones are used for beer production, but they can also be used to prepare a tincture. You don't have to collect them yourself, as you can purchase them at herbal stores.
How to prepare tincture?
To prepare the tincture, you need 100 grams of hop cones, preferably half aromatic and half bitter. Place them in a jar and cover them with 2 cups of 70% alcohol. Seal the container and leave it in a dark place for 10-14 days, shaking it gently every day. After two weeks, strain the tincture through gauze, pour it into bottles, and seal them. It's best to let it mature for a month.
Hop cone tincture is served three times a day by the teaspoon. For severe nervous tension or insomnia, you can drink a small shot glass.
