Half of Americans call Trump a "dangerous dictator" after 100 days

Donald Trump is considered a "dangerous dictator" by many Americans. According to research conducted by the Public Religion Research Institute (PRRI), up to 52% of U.S. citizens hold this belief. In contrast, four out of ten Americans view Trump positively.

Donald Trump has been in office for over 100 days. His actions, both domestically and internationally, can be described as revolutionary with confidence. Notably, Trump aims to achieve peace in Ukraine while attempting to maintain relatively good relations with the aggressor, Vladimir Putin. Moreover, he imposed high tariffs on many countries, including the entire European Union. Although these tariffs have been temporarily suspended, the whole world remains uncertain about what other ideas the U.S. president might propose.

Speculation has risen, especially after he changed the name of the Gulf of Mexico to the American Gulf, expressed interest in acquiring Greenland or the Panama Canal, and recently demanded free passage through the Suez Canal.

Survey from the USA: How Americans assess Trump

Trump is also engaging in a "war" with the U.S. establishment, publicly attacking journalists, institutions, and universities. Periodic surveys gauge the mood among Americans after more than 100 days of Trump's administration. Axios published the results of a study conducted by the Public Religion Research Institute (PRRI).

The survey reveals that 52% of respondents agreed with the provocative statement that Trump "is a dangerous dictator whose power should be limited before he destroys American democracy." Among independent voters, 56% agreed. Only four in ten U.S. citizens expressed positive opinions about Trump after his first 100 days in office.

The most significant dissatisfaction among Americans stems from decisions regarding mass deportations, tariffs, and the cancellation of student visas. American society also negatively assesses the mass layoffs of federal workers in many agencies and the inhumane treatment of detainees being deported.

Trump assessed: "Threat to democracy"

Among those with a favorable opinion of Trump, the vast majority—83%—are Republican voters. A smaller portion, 8%, of Democratic supporters also expressed a positive view of the former U.S. president. Furthermore, 81% of Republicans surveyed continue to believe that he is a decisive leader who should be empowered to help return the country to its former strength.

Most Americans view Trump in dictatorial terms, and I think most Americans are concerned that American democracy is on the line – Melissa Deckman, CEO of PRRI, in an interview with Axios.

This study was conducted from February 28 to March 20 on a sample of over 5,000 people from all 50 states in the United States.
