As grilling season arrives, our gardens fill with the aromas of spices, marinades, and smoke. Though grilling is often associated with meat dishes, bananas are a surprisingly popular choice at my home.

Which bananas to choose for grilling?

I select bananas that aren't too ripe to prevent them from falling apart during roasting. Ideally, their skins should be a uniform yellow. An alternative to traditional bananas is plantains, which also grill wonderfully. Plantains, known as "vegetable bananas," contain more starch and are less sweet, making them ideal for pairing with meat dishes. Simply peel, slice, season, and grill for about 15 minutes.

Recipe for grilled bananas

This simple dessert practically makes itself. Just slice the fruit, add the ingredients, and wrap in aluminum foil. Under the heat, the walnuts release their aroma, and the honey caramelizes the bananas. This sweet ending to an afternoon barbecue is sure to delight everyone, not just the kids.

Ingredients:

  • 3.5 oz walnuts
  • 4 bananas
  • 5.3 oz Greek yogurt
  • 4 tablespoons honey

Instructions:

  1. Chop the walnuts and toast them in a dry pan.
  2. Peel the bananas and cut into thick slices, then pack them into aluminum foil pouches.
  3. Grill for 10-12 minutes. After this time, carefully unfold the foil, add a tablespoon of Greek yogurt, and the toasted walnuts.
  4. Optionally, sprinkle the dessert with grated dark or milk chocolate.
