Grill your baguette: Elevate with homemade garlic butter

Grilling is often associated with meat and vegetables, but a simple trick can transform a plain baguette into the star of a garden party. The secret? Garlic butter. A crispy crust, a slightly chewy center, and a distinct aroma of garlic and herbs make it hard to resist garlic butter bread.

When the grill is fired up and the smell of grilled meat fills the air, there's always that moment when you're craving something to nibble on before everything is ready. That's when my go-to trick comes into play: a baguette with garlic butter, tossed straight onto the grill. The delicate butter starts to melt, the garlic releases its aroma, and the bread turns golden and crispy. It might seem like nothing special, but this simple addition always wins over guests.

Ingredients:

  • About 3/4 cup heavy cream (for the butter)

  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • 1 baguette

Preparation:

  1. Beat the heavy cream at high speed with a mixer until it starts to separate into buttermilk and butter lumps. This process takes a few minutes.
  2. Press the butter through cheesecloth or a sieve to remove excess buttermilk.
  3. Add the pressed garlic, parsley, salt, and pepper to the soft butter, and mix thoroughly.
  4. Slice the baguette diagonally or in half lengthwise, and spread the freshly made garlic butter on it.
  5. Place the baguette on the grill rack and toast for a few minutes, until the bread turns golden and the butter has melted beautifully.

Why is it worth making your own butter for garlic butter?

At first, making homemade butter might seem like unnecessary effort, but the results are worth it. Freshly whipped butter boasts a taste and aroma that are incomparable — it's more delicate, creamier, and free from preservatives or artificial additives.

This enhances its pairing with additives like garlic or herbs, creating an incredibly aromatic and flavorful paste. The process of whipping butter is also immensely satisfying, especially when you know you've crafted it all by hand.

Another bonus? Homemade butter leaves you with buttermilk, which you can use for pancakes, fritters, or enjoy as a refreshing drink.
