Google tests groundbreaking "AI Only" search with Gemini 2.0

The Google search engine rarely undergoes changes that make it unrecognizable or introduce groundbreaking innovations. However, we might be witnessing a pilot project that qualifies as such. Google has begun testing an "AI Only" view, where search results are solely generated by Gemini 2.0.

Google introduces changes to the search engine involving artificial intelligence, clearly stating to users that results constructed by Gemini 2.0 are at least as important as the traditional web-based results. For users engaged with Search Labs, Google is experimentally enabling a new "AI Mode" tab. This appears as the first card in Google and provides solely AI-compiled results.

According to Google, this approach will enable users to get answers to complex queries more effectively, as Gemini 2.0 is designed to interpret them. AI-generated results are particularly intended to be useful in cases that require comparisons, exploring multiple issues, and creating explanations.

Although this hasn't been explicitly stated and remains speculative, one might wonder whether, ultimately (likely more in terms of years rather than months), Google might plan to introduce AI mode as the default setting in the search engine. This could potentially "overturn" the way we currently think about internet searching as we know it.

While other search results remain accessible, in many cases, the compiled Gemini answer that addresses the specifics of a particular query might be more valuable for the user. Ultimately, Google's users are likely most interested in the answer itself, not necessarily in the source behind it, assuming its credibility can be established upfront.
